There have been no ichthyosaurs swimming in the inland oceans of Nevada for 200 million years. But the 36 fossil specimens of the giant prehistoric reptiles found here have lent their name to the Nevada state fossil, as well as to a popular craft beer in Reno. The fossil shelter and its interpretive exhibit are located in Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park, 23 miles east of Gabbs, in the middle of nowhere. The park is both a Registered Natural Landmark and, with its ghost town of Berlin, listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
