At 13,063 feet in elevation, Wheeler Peak is the second highest mountain in the state. Located within Great Basin National Park, Wheeler is a part of the Snake Range, near the Utah border. It is named for the leader of the Wheeler Survey, explorer George Montague Wheeler. In the late 19th century he was the first to measure the altitude of the mountain, which towers 8,000 feet above its valley floor
