Remnants of the Old Lincoln Highway

Remnants of the Old Lincoln Highway

Dedicated October 31, 1913, the Lincoln Highway (later U.S. Rt. 40) spanned America from New York’s Times Square City to Lincoln Park in San Francisco. These sections of pavement, intact but abandoned, sit just above the south bank of the Truckee River about a mile west of Floriston, California, in what was once the town of Iceland. See photographs of Iceland during its heyday in the gallery below. Traffic on this stretch of road was transferred to I-80 in the 1960s. These sections of the route connected with Hirschdale Road east of the town of Truckee. The location may be seen in a satellite view here.
